North Down Badminton League


 

The North Down badminton League was founded in the early 70's, The first meeting took place in Ballyholme Presbyterian Church Hall 7th October 1971. Teams represented 23 clubs which were divided into 6 divisions as follows -

Ardlea, Ballygillbert, Bangor Parish, Bangor Presbyterian, Ballyeasboro, Carnlea, Donghadee Parish, Hamilton Road, Holywood Parish, Holywood Presbyterian, Killinchy, Kircubbin Presbyterian, 1st Comber Presbyterian, Newtonards, Millise, 1st Comber, Regent Street, Columbanus, St Comgalls, St Elizabeth's, St Marks, St Mary's Comber, Shore Street and Portaferry.

Many of these teams are currently still playing competitively. Members of our league have successfully completed in representative competitions, ie Gilbert, Jack Wilson and Graham Trophies.

The Juvenile section was added to our league in 1973. Eleven teams representing the following clubs - Groomsport, Holywood, Hamilton Road, Ballyholme, 1st Bangor, St Elizabeths, St Marys Comber, Portaferry and Kircubbin were divided into 3 sections.

Dresswell were our sponsors since 1977 and Down Town Radio have also been covering the progress of league and tournamamnts in their sports coverage.
